American Music, American Sound
Our Mission: The Sandlapper Singers present concerts of American
choral music in a uniquely entertaining and engaging style.
Our History: Founded in 1996 as the area’s only professional choral
group, we are in our fourteenth season.
Our Director: Dr. Lillian Quackenbush, retired chairman of the music
department at Columbia College, founded the Sandlapper Singers and serves as our
artistic director and conductor.
Our Concerts: We offer a yearly series of three concerts. Admission is
$15 for a single adult ticket and $5 for a single student ticket, and $40 for an
adult season
ticket. The Singers present concerts in many
churches and concert series throughout South Carolina.
Our Audience: Audience surveys have shown that our listeners are above
average in education and income and that most are above the age of 35.
Our Programming: We focus on American music, offering a delightful mix
of the familiar and the new. We premier works by South Carolina composers. Our
concerts combine sumptuous singing and staging with insightful commentary by
Dr. Quackenbush that both entertains and enlightens.
Our Standards: We hold competitive auditions and select only singers
of superior quality. We produce a beautiful vocal sound in an entertaining and
inspiring style.
Our Benefits to the Community: We provide performance opportunities
for Columbia’s skilled instrumental musicians. We develop fresh talent, raise
the standard of choral singing in our community and across the state, and give
audiences the chance to hear wonderful music “made in the USA.” With our new
venue at Dreher High Auditorium our emphasis on education is exemplified by the
participation on all our programs of children and youth.
Our Benefits to Our Sponsors: We offer sponsors the opportunity to
partner with us in improving the cultural life of the Midlands and South
Carolina, making it a better place to live and work. Supporting the Sandlapper
Singers enhances a business’s public image, builds recognition and fosters good
will. We recognize sponsors’ contributions in our advertising, in our publicity,
in our concert programs, and verbally at the beginning of each concert.
Our Endorsements: Among the organizations that have endorsed and
funded the Sandlapper Singers, we are proud to list The State newspaper, the
Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties, the South Carolina Arts
Commission, the Central Carolina Community Foundation, the South Carolina
Humanities Council and the Southern Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for
the Arts.
Our Recent Sponsors: Firms that have sponsored concerts in recent
years include Blue Cross of South Carolina, First Citizens Bank, Publix
Supermarket Charities, Abacus Planning Group, Quackenbush Architects, and
Carolina First Bank, to name a few. |
