The
Young Sandlapper Singers
American Music, American
Sound
The Young Sandlapper Singers is an educational outreach of the Sandlapper Singers, whose mission is to
present American choral music in a uniquely
entertaining and engaging style.
Vision: The
Young Sandlapper Singers will be a training
ground for children and youth to enable them
to excel in choral singing in a uniquely
entertaining and engaging style consistent
with the high quality of performance of its
parent group, the Sandlapper Singers.
Rationale: Children and youth must
be given music education opportunities that
supplement what they receive in a school
setting, giving them additional
opportunities to excel in music
understanding, music reading, and music
making. Performance will be a natural
outgrowth of the music learning process.
Music skills, vocal skills, ensemble skills,
and performance skills will be developed to
the highest possible level. This will be
accomplished through a combination of high
standards of discipline and rigor AND
a setting which promotes joy in music
learning and music making. The joy derived
from mastering a musical art and
participating fully in the ensemble
experience will translate into performances
in which that joy can be transmitted to and
experienced by the audience. Music
performed should be American music with
American sound, consistent with the parent
organization. Creativity should also be
fostered in these children and youth so that
American choral music will continue to
evolve and grow in the next generation.
The treble choir consists of children in
rising 3rd through 8th
grades in which the basic elements of music
understanding, music reading, and music
making are developed
Children and youth Choir:
-
One rehearsal per week, for one hour+.
Strict adherence to attendance policies.
-
Ear training, music reading, vocal
production, and ensemble singing will be
developed.
-
At home assignments outside of rehearsal
time will help children to continue to
develop their skills on a daily basis.
These may be tracked via a weekly
assignment sheet that must be signed by
the parents and returned each week.
-
Assignments will include:
-
Theory work sheets to promote music
reading skills and creativity may be
used.
-
Daily vocal exercises to develop
vocal skills and the discipline
required to achieve them.
-
Listening assignments to maximize
learning of the music being prepared
and to expose the students to good
choral music sounds.

Side-by-Side
Program
To further extend our
educational emphasis we have established a
program for high school students. Selected
schools are invited to participate, singing
advanced repertoire “side-by-side” with our
professional ensemble for a “once in a
lifetime” experience. Additionally, the
schools are invited to perform some of their
own repertoire on that same concert. Our
Artistic Director, Lillian Quackenbush meets
with the choral students in their classroom,
and the students rehearse several times with
the Singers in preparation for the concert.
For further information about how to become
part of this program, contact the Artistic
Director at 790.4423.
